Discrimination Reef and Non-Reef Environments, Using REE Geochemistry

چکیده

This research aims to distinguish the reef environment from non-reef environment. The Oligocene-Miocene-succussion in western Iraq was selected as a case study, represented by reefal limestone facies of Anah Formation (Late Oligocene) deposited reef-back environments, dolomitic Euphrates (Early Miocene) open sea and gypsiferous marly Fatha (Middle lagoonal content rare earth elements (REEs) (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, Ho, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y) appear be much lower than those facies. have low REEs due being transitional phase. investigated ƩREEs PAAS. shows an average higher Global Standard Carbonate Rocks (GSCR), whereas contain lower. Y/Ho, Y/Dy, Er/Nd were used distinctive indicators diagnosis; high value compared PAAS are than1. In contrast, (lagoonal) Y/Dy is 1, but 1. While Y/Ho moderate values close

Shape learning and discrimination in reef fish.

Coral reef fish live in a complex world of colour and patterns. If they are to survive they need to be able to correctly identify the things they see (e.g. predators, prey) and act accordingly (e.g. flee, feed). This paper investigates whether discrimination is limited to ecologically relevant stimuli or is in fact more adaptable. Our work focuses on the reef damselfish Pomacentrus amboinensis....

Large–Scale Movement and Reef Fidelity of Grey Reef Sharks

Despite an Indo-Pacific wide distribution, the movement patterns of grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) and fidelity to individual reef platforms has gone largely unstudied. Their wide distribution implies that some individuals have dispersed throughout tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, but data on large-scale movements do not exist. We present data from nine C. amblyrhynchos monit...

Reef revelations

While scientists at CERN are no doubt struggling to contain their disappointment at delays to experiments that may reveal new insights into the origins of life, scientists at the Australian Institute of Marine Science must be struggling to contain their excitement as they set about characterising and categorising a cornucopia of newly discovered species. With nearly 150 new soft corals as well ...

Postglacial Fringing-Reef to Barrier-Reef conversion on Tahiti links Darwin's reef types

In 1842 Charles Darwin claimed that vertical growth on a subsiding foundation caused fringing reefs to transform into barrier reefs then atolls. Yet historically no transition between reef types has been discovered and they are widely considered to develop independently from antecedent foundations during glacio-eustatic sea-level rise. Here we reconstruct reef development from cores recovered b...

Prediction of Bleaching in Coral Reef Communities Using a Temperature Index(Southern and northern Persian Gulf)

Sea surface temperature is one of the most effective physical parameters that affects the health of coral reefs communities.High frequency of the bleaching phenomenon has extensively occurred in the Persian Gulf in the recent years due to the increase in temperature and increased changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) resulting in great mortality in the coral communities. The aim of this ...
